THREE fire crews were called out on Sunday afternoon to tackle a car fire following a three-vehicle collision on the M56 near Helsby.
The collision took place on the M56 Eastbound J14 – J12 shortly before 4pm causing lengthy traffic delays.
Three fire engines, from Runcorn, Ellesmere Port and Powey Lane attended at the scene.
On arrival, crews found one vehicle well alight in the central reservation and a road traffic collision involving a total of three vehicles.
Firefighters put out the fire involving the car and a total of five casualties were given precautionary checks by paramedics.
UPDATE AT 16:55
Firefighters are now leaving the scene and have handed the incident over to the Highways Agency to arrange recovery of the vehicle in lane three of the carriageway.
Traffic remains HELD on the #M56 eastbound in #Cheshire between J14 (#Hapsford) an J12 (#Runcorn) following a multi-vehicle collision.
All lanes have now however re-opened on the westbound carriageway.
