Fond farewell for popular PE teacher

FAMILY, friends, colleagues and former pupils gathered at Kash 22 to celebrate the retirement of PE Teacher Martin Smiddy MBE.

He moved to Frodsham at aged 10 and has lived in the town ever since!

Martin started teaching at the former Frodsham High School in 1976 and upon it’s closure moved to Helsby High School.

The former Cheshire Student Champion weightlifter has taught over 8,000 children during his teaching career.

The father of three was awarded the MBE for services to education and younger persons in Frodsham in 2009.

Martin says he would like his legacy to be “inspiring young people to enjoy sport and look after their physical health through sport and exercise.”

After a well earned holiday he intends to catch up on all those jobs that he’s put off over the years!

  1. Mr Smiddy was a jerk and I doubt time has changed that. There were certainly teachers at Frodsham High School who were worse than him, but as a student who endured bullying during my time there, I can honestly say he would ignore reports of bullying if they were being committed by students who excelled at Phyical Education. An example of one of these bullies would be Mark Igo.
