St Laurence Church and Frodsham History Society to hold joint exhibition

FRODSHAM’S St Laurence Parish Church and Frodsham and district History Society are holding a joint exhibition over the weekend of June 8-9.

“Open House” will involve a tour of the church, a tour of the bell tower – Saturday only – and a chance to learn about some of the many stories about the memorials in the church.
These include the story of the prince buried in the churchyard and how a retired teacher buried in Frodsham is connected to the birthplace of former prime minister Williams Gladstone…
There will be a children’s trail – and refreshments will be available.
The present St Laurence Church dates from 1180. Although it has undergone restoration over the years. The first vicar was appointed in 1209 and was named Ralf de Frodesham.
In the churchyard there is a medieval stone coffin and also a stone cross base bearing a copper sundial dated 1879.
One interesting former vicar was the Rev William Charles Cotton, who was appointed in 1857.

He was an acknowledged expert on bees aad prior to his time at Frodsham spent some years in New Zealand where he trained many local people – settlers and Maori – in bee keeping.
His work with bees led to Frodsham Town Council adopting the bee as its official emblem.
The Rev Cotton was also responsible for much of the restoration work carried out on the church.
