Vandals strike twice at Greengates Park

VANDALS have struck twice in Frodsham’s Green Gates Community Park – drawing expressions of disgust from local residents and from the Town Council.

It’s still less than a year since the park was officially opened – after battle to save the land for the local community which lasted more than 10 years.
Originally known as “The Backki” the land was used as an unofficial playground by generations of local youngsters.
Then it was kept locked for years and Frodsham Town Council – who own the site – were considering selling it for housing until local residents protested. Then the council agreed to save the land as a community park. MP Mike Amesbury added his support.

A £40,000 grant from the Marshes Community Benefit Fund and a £10,000 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, together with other funding, saw the campaign really get under way. The Town Council also committed £150,000 to the project.
There was disappointment and anger when vandals struck, destroying trellis fencing.
The fencing was replaced early in March – but the fencing was destroyed again. The council said: “We are hugely disappointed in the residents who destroyed the trellis fencing which was replaced following previous stupid and entirely pointless vandalism.
“This was intended as a pleasant area for folk of all ages to sit and relax with flowering, climbing plants.”
The council also expressed disgust that some some residents were allowing their dogs to foul a children’s play area.
