Frodsham’s own “Lionesses” lead the way in girls’ football

WOMENS’ football is enjoying a boom time, thanks to the success of the Lionesses in the European Cup – but it shouldn’t come as a surprise to people in Frodsham.
The face of girls’ football has changed dramatically in recent times – and Frodsham Junior Football Club has been at the forefront of girls’ football for years.
More and more girls are becoming interested each year – and the success of Lionesses is likely to ensure this trend continues.
Leah Stockton is the club’s girls’ lead.
She said: “I feel especially fortunate to be head of the girls section.
“I started to play for the club when I was four and now, at 23, I am still playing and proud to be the dedicated lead.”
The club has an approved Weetabix Wildcats section, for girls aged 5-11, a thriving Women’s team and a Women’s Walking Football team. They have the biggest girls’ section in Cheshire.
Leah said: “This means our players range from five to somewhere in their mid-40s and 50s.
“We are proud to have multiple female coaches across all our teams, helping nearly 180 girls in Frodsham to enjoy football.
“As a club, we are so excited for the future of female football in this country and we were lucky enough to get a large group of our girls together to watch the Lionesses win the final.”
The club’s girls’ section is an official sister club of Manchester City Ladies FC.
Frodsham JFC was founded in 1979 and in 2017 formed a partnership with Helsby High School which enables them to use the school playing fields for home matches and summer training.
