Nine fire crews called out to tackle fire at turkey farm near Frodsham

UPDATED: NINE fire crews were called out on Sunday afternoon to tackle a fire at a turkey farm building at Ashton Grange near Frodsham.

Despite the best efforts of firefighters a number of turkey chicks sadly died in the fire.

The incident which started at around 4:30pm involved a fully developed fire in a single-storey shed measuring approximately 40m x 20m.

Crews split the building into sectors to deal with the fire and prevent the fire from spreading, however, the shed suffered a partial collapse. Firefighters are also cooled an adjacent shed and three nearby gas tanks to prevent them from overheating and igniting.

Firefighting operations continue on the scene at 11pm last night. Firefighters continued to damp down and check for hotspots. The number of fire engines has now been reduced to two, plus a high volume pump and the Scorpion extendable turret.

Activity was ongoing overnight.

Firefighters remained in place on Monday morning using an aerial ladder platform to dampen down any hotspots.

The unit involved in the fire housed a large number of turkey chicks, and despite the best efforts of firefighters and site staff, who worked together to save a large number of the chicks, not all were able to be saved and sadly died in the fire.

An investigation has taken place and the fire is believed to have started accidentally.
