Sandstone Ridge shortlisted as an area of outstanding beauty

THE Cheshire Sandstone Ridge has been shortlisted for designation as an area of outstanding beauty.
Designation would bring important investment to the area – and Frodsham and Helsby could both benefit.
The two communities can lay claim to being the northern gateway to the Ridge, which runs some 30km to Malpas, covering about 220 sq km.

Its rural landscape is dominated by a patchwork of small fields, with woodland, heathland, meres and mosses – and is famous for its hill forts.”
The area covered by the Ridge boasts some 449 Listed Buildings, six Iron Age hillforts and four castles.
It also boasts Helsby Quarry, which was recently awarded a Green Flag and is itself a popular visitor attraction.
Some 36,000 people live within its area, it is the location for 1,000 businesses and it offers views across eight counties.
