A Police incident on the M56 near Frodsham & Helsby during the early hours of this morning caused traffic gridlock in the area.
The M56 was closed in both directions between Junctions 12 and 14 with Cheshire Police at the scene, along with traffic officers, who are assisting with traffic management.
The motorway has since re-opened although traffic remained heavy for some time.
Cheshire Police has since confirmed the closure was due to concerns for the welfare of a man on a bridge. After engaging with the man for several hours, officers took him to a ‘place of safety.
A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “At around 2.30am on Thursday 19 May police were called to reports of concerns for the welfare of a man on a bridge on the M56 between junction 12 and 14.
“Officers attended the scene and engaged with the man for several hours. The man was taken to a place of safety at around 7.40am.”
