Helsby crash – latest news and pictures

THE full extent of the damage caused when a gritting lorry plunged off the A56 and smashed into the front of a house at Helsby was only revealed when the vehicle was pulled out of the building.
A gaping hole was revealed in the front of the newly-built house as the gritter was pulled slowly, inch by inch, from the house in an attempt to avoid causing further damage.

The A56 was closed all morning following the crash at around 1am today. Diversions, involving the M56, were put in place.
The driver of the Cheshire West and Chester Council gritter was taken to hospital after the crash but it not believed to be seriously injured.
Members of the family living in the house were evacuated and are staying with friends or relatives.
But the circumstances of the crash are still being investigated – and structural engineers are inspecting the damage to the house
Police have asked anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them on 101 quoting IML 271042.
